Steve McCarthy - A Ward Ballina

ABOUT STEVE

Hi, I'm Stephen McCarthy, a proud resident of the Ballina Shire for over the past 50 years. My three children and I, have completed our secondary schooling here.

My family and I were the proprietors of McCarthy's Bakery in both Ballina and the Alstonville village for many years - many of you would have known my family, eaten our cakes, pastries and breads. I recall one person who ordered an annual supply of horse-shoe pastries. Another, who annually ordered xmas puddings for the players theatre!

My work ethic comes from my mom. My mum would work tirelessly, 7 days a week for decades. She would never complain. My mum would say 'Just get out there and do whatever you have to do, to the best of your ability', 'Nobody can ask for more than that.'

After selling the businesses, and with an interest in Internet Technology, I spent a year at Wollongbar Tafe and then continued my learning pathway through to Southern Cross University, where I have completed a Bachelor of Internet Technology - software engineer. I love the concept of lifelong learning.

My 45 years of experience in local business equips me to assist the community in going forward.

I have a passion for team sport and in 2021, my (NJL), Ballina Breakers team, won the Northern Junior League, div 2. It was an amazing experience for all. I also supported in gaining approval for, and the construction of a four-court basketball stadium 'Ballina Indoor Sports Centre' (BISC), that supports many sports and events programs for the community. The BISC gives the community an opportunity to develop local athletes. I have the privilege of helping develop and coach basketball juniors, right through to senior athletes and enjoy the challenging task of progressing our young 'Hoops' athletes. I aslo coach in the active schools program. All of this was achieved with like-minded talented coaches, parents, athletes and the community.

My communities interest are paramount; I have a keen interest in our local infrustructure and an obligation to help our local youth, and most recently, I have served the Ballina Shire community as a councillor... listening, learning, developing, progressing the best way forward - where a sense of humour is essential.

Like you, I live in a world of global events that impact our community.

I am here to serve our community, protect our assets, our people, activities, keep rates affordable... ect
